Dairy Awareness
They said it was good for you.
They said it would make you strong.
They convinced you it was part of American culture.
They said their cows are happy.
They lied.
We are accustomed to consumer brands stretching the truth to sell us products. Perhaps one of the caramel-colored sodas does taste significantly better than its counterpart. Perhaps the sneakers will make you just…just get off the couch and can now fly like Michael Jordan. It’s all good. We appreciate their hustle.
But when does the hustle cross the line? The answer is when their claims become gaslighting. When the opposite is true. When they systematically hook people from childhood using lies. When an entire industry holds powerful political strongholds and, not surprisingly, receives an outrageous amount of federal government support. When the truth is obfuscated for greed.
Here’s the truth.
It doesn’t “do a body good” and none of those poor cows are “happy.”
- Newborn calves are taken from their mothers on dairy factory farms within 24 hours of their birth
- Male calves born on dairy farms are sent to feedlots, which are penned-in facilities that can hold up to 150,000 cattle, where they are confined and fed grain diets so that they gain weight and can be slaughtered as quickly as possible
- Roughly 65% of all adult Americans have some form of lactose intolerance. Those rates rise precipitously among minority groups
- Contrary to the fairytale of “Happy Cows,” female calves are ripped from their mothers and forced to live outside in the elements and in solitary confinement in 7’ x 4’ x 4’ calf “hutches”
- Nearly 30% of all milk cartons served on school lunch trays are thrown away in the US every day
- Water is polluted in the process of creating dairy products, from the pesticides and fertilizers used on feed crops to runoff manure at agricultural facilities. A dairy of just 200 cows produces as much nitrogen sewage as a town of 5,000-10,000 people
Still want milk?
